2 Days in Sydney: The Perfect Pre-Cruise Itinerary
2 Days in Sydney: My Pre-Cruise Adventure
Before my cruise set sail, I had two days to spend in Sydney — and it turned out to be the perfect amount of time to hit every “must-see” on my list without feeling rushed. Between the Opera House, a harbor ferry ride, Bondi Beach, a hop-on hop-off bus, and a day with the koalas and giraffes at Taronga Zoo, I managed to fit it all in before heading to the ship. Here’s how my two days went. Our starting point was the Marriot in Circular Quay
Day 1: Harbor, Icons, and the Zoo
Morning: Circular Quay and the Sydney Opera House
I started where the city starts — Circular Quay. It’s Sydney’s transport hub, and it’s also where I got my first proper look at the Sydney Opera House, its sail-like shells catching the morning light against the water. I did a guided tour inside to see how the building works — the acoustics, the design story, the sheer scale up close. Afterward, I grabbed a coffee at one of the quayside cafés and took it all in with the Harbor Bridge as a backdrop.
Midday: Ferry across to Taronga Zoo
From Circular Quay, I hopped on a ferry across the harbor to Taronga Zoo. It was one of the best short boat rides I’ve ever taken — I got sweeping views of the Opera House and the Harbor Bridge from the water, and the zoo itself turned out to be set on a hillside with harbor views from inside the enclosures (even the animals had a better view than most five-star hotels). I caught an early sailing to make the most of my visit, and was glad I’d booked a combo ticket for the ferry and zoo entry ahead of time — it saved me from queuing.
Inside the zoo, I made sure not to miss the koalas, the giraffes with the harbor as their backdrop, and caught the seal and bird shows too. I ended up spending about three to four hours there.
Evening: Back to the city
I took the ferry back to Circular Quay as the sun started to drop — the light over the harbour in the late afternoon was some of the best I saw all trip. I had dinner around The Rocks, with the Opera House lit up for the night as my view.
Day 2: Hop-On Hop-Off Bus and Bondi Beach
Morning: Hop-on hop-off bus around the city
With only one full day left, I decided a hop-on hop-off bus was the most efficient way to cover Sydney’s spread-out highlights. The open-top double-decker buses ran on loops of 20 or more stops with buses arriving roughly every 20–30 minutes, so I hopped off wherever caught my eye — Darling Harbor, The Rocks, Kings Cross, and the Royal National Park — and hopped back on when I was ready to move. The recorded commentary doubled as a casual city tour while I got my bearings.
Afternoon: Bondi Beach
I saved a solid chunk of the afternoon for Bondi. It’s Sydney’s most famous stretch of sand, and it was easy to see why — golden beach, clean water, and a laid-back café and surf culture that felt distinctly Sydney. I had some energy left, so I did part of the coastal walk from Bondi to Coogee, one of Australia’s best short walks, hugging cliffside lookouts and smaller beaches along the way — I made it to Tamarama before turning back.
Evening: Pack and prep for the cruise
Quick Tips From My Trip
- Booking the ferry + zoo combo in advance saved me time and money versus buying separately, and got me on an earlier ferry.
- Buying the hop-on hop-off ticket the night before meant I didn’t waste morning time in a queue.
- Comfortable shoes were essential — between the zoo hills, the bus stops, and the Bondi coastal path, I was on my feet all day.
- I checked ferry and zoo hours before heading out, since schedules shifted a bit for weather.
- I kept valuables minimal on embarkation day, which made getting straight to the cruise terminal much easier.
